Our state's legislature is on the verge of enacting a sweeping new law to
massively expand the role of police and prisons in our lives.
This new "habitual offender" bill includes:

Wiretapping the public

"Three Strikes" - Automatic maximum sentences, even for minor, non-violent
offences (think of California's Three Strikes Law, where a quarter of
their inmate population is serving life sentences!)

Mandatory 'Post-Release Supervision" for everyone released from jail or
prison

A Brand New Crime: Failure to purchase your own DNA sample from the state!

EPOCA is working to improve this bill in the following ways:

Ensure inclusion of a reform of Mandatory Minimum Drug Sentences for
non-violent offences

Narrow the scope of "Three Strikes" so it is limited to serious, repeat
violent offenders only

Remove the rest of the bill: it is far too large and complex to rush
through the legislative process. This bill includes pieces that pose
serious threat to our civil liberties and a massive increase in
corrections spending. We believe that this should strictly be a sentencing
reform bill, as it was originally reported and expressed to be.

Join us on December 15th to make sure we limit the damage this bill could
cause our communities. Free buses leave from Worcester City Hall at 9:30
